New Cafeteria

St. Jude Medical employs more than 16,000 people worldwide and is on the FORTUNE 500 List. The purchase of this 480,000-square-foot office expands its current facilities and consolidates operations for the company’s Cardiovascular Division. The original kitchen in the existing building was designed for a carry-in program, then was turned into an on-site preparation facility without expanding the space. The menu was limited and was supported with accelerated ovens.

During the renovation and expansion, the foodservice department moved to an entirely new location that was designed as a centerpiece of the facility. The ‘Keystone Cafe’ also serves as a venue for corporate meetings and as an impressive space to host clients. The area is a visible focal point when you enter the building, built around a staircase that required careful planning for duct hoods around the walls. It also incorporates environmentally responsible and sustainable design. At least 400 employees have moved to the location. As the building is filled to capacity, as many at 1,500 employees will report to the Plymouth campus.

The new operation has a full production kitchen with significant enhancements, such as a grill station, deli, fresh entrées, soup & salad bar and stone hearth pizza oven. We also designed a large area for brown bag diners to prepare their meals, adjacent to the 300-seat dining area to encourage employees to dine together. We provided foodservice facilities design for the phases of programming and schematic design, design development, contract documents and review and observation. Areas of design include entree concepts, hot and cold food production, catering/staging, receiving and warewashing.
